Mizone, which is one of China's leading vitamin-infused water brands, had been lined up for a relaunch next month to "reignite" growth, Danone said yesterday. These plans are now postponed, due to Mizone's sole production site, in Wuhan, remains closed because of the coronavirus.

Danone said the closure, along with a drop in demand because of Chinese Government travel restrictions, is having "significant effects" on first-quarter sales. Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, is believed to be where the coronavirus first transmitted to humans and has seen some of the strictest restrictions.

99r8这是只有精品视频20Speaking after the release of full-year results yesterday, Danone CFO Cécile Cabanis said the group's bottled water performance in 2020 will be "highly dependent" on Mizone, "but we have to expect a growth that will be very moderate." Mizone is expected to record a 50% sales drop this month.

99r8这是只有精品视频20China is Danone's second-largest market, bringing in 10% of group sales. Mizone accounts for one-third of the company's sales in China.

Explaining the situation, Cabanis said: "Mizone bottles arrive to the consumer through very complex and multi-layered distribution channels and they are mostly sold on-the-go in convenience stores. So, the demand for the entire category is severely affected given what is happening now with the coronavirus."

The company said the Mizone relaunch will now take place in the second quarter of the year.

"Mizone has been reformulating and we found it challenging over a couple of years," Danone CEO Emmanuel Faber said. "We found the right formula for Mizone in the future for China. We believe that we are now having a relaunch that is very powerful and we expect Mizone to grow again."

Cabanis told analysts the expected impact of the coronavirus on Danone's total sales will be a sales loss in Q1 of about EUR100m (US$109.4m). "This is the estimation to-date and we are of course monitoring very carefully the situation," the CFO added.
